Accused and sentenced to execution during the 1692 Salem Witch Trials, my 10th great-grandaunt managed to flee to Maine to avoid that fate and returned to Massachusetts later. My infamous 2nd cousin 10x removed, Ann Putnam Jr., was one of her key accusers.
The family politics of the situation are even more wild than the colony, county, and town politics. These people knew each other much better than most neighbors know each other now. Many of them had taken arduous journeys across the ocean together and families had married into one another. The dichotomic dynamic of the Salem Witch Trials can be seen still reflected in the world, and especially in the USA, today.
Divide and conquer, or so they say…
